Afro-Latinas’ Activism, Personal Stories Shine in New Book

HOUSTON, TX—WOMEN WARRIORS OF THE AFRO-LATINA DIASPORA is comprised of eleven essays and four poems in which Latina women of African descent share their stories. The collection is a fascinating look at the legacy of more than 400 years of African enslavement in the Americas.

The authors are from all over Latin America—the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Panama, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Brazil—and they write about issues such as colonialism, oppression and disenfranchisement. Diva Moreira, a black Brazilian, writes that she experienced racism and humiliation at a very young age. The worst experience, she remembers, was when her mother’s bosses told her Diva didn’t need to go to school after the fourth grade, \”because blacks don’t need to study more than that.\”…

CONVOCATORIA CURSO DE ESPECIALIZACIÓN SOCIEDAD CIVIL SOBRE ACCESO A LA JUSTICIA DE PERSONAS PRIVADAS DE LIBERTAD 2012

El Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Chile (CDH) y el Instituto Nacional de Derechos Humanos (INDH) con el apoyo del Instrumento Europeo para la Democracia y los Derechos Humanos, se complace en presentar la convocatoria  al curso de especialización Acceso a la justicia de personas privadas de libertad, orientado al público general que desee capacitarse en estas materias.

Este curso tiene por objeto revisar materias referentes a estándares internacionales sobre acceso a la justicia de personas privadas de libertad, en especial, los vinculados a la aplicación de sanciones disciplinarias y analizar, a la luz de dichos estándares, la regulación reglamentaria y normativa existente en Chile sobre la materia.

El curso de especialización se desarrollará en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Chile y tendrá una duración de 1 día y media jornada. El curso se impartirá durante los días jueves 29 y viernes 30 de noviembre de 2012. El día jueves la jornada de clases será de 9:30 a 16.30 hrs. y el día viernes de 9:30 a 13:00 hrs.
