DR. NOLY FERNANDEZ
A Venezuelan Physician from the Wayuú Indigenous People, and National
Director of the Indigenous Health Department.
Dr. Fernandez holds Degrees in Surgery, Public Management and Public
Health, specializing in Epidemiology. She was a rural doctor and Health
Coordinator in her native Zulia before being appointed as National Director
in 2004. She developed the Inter-Cultural Health Care Program implemented in
Venezuelan Indigenous communities, thus, integrating, for the first time,
traditional indigenous knowledge and western medicine in a government
program. A long time advocate for gender equality and indigenous rights, Dr.
Fernandez served as Health Coordinator for the Continental Network of
Indigenous Women of the South (2003-2009), and advisor to the Latin American
Indigenous Parliament (2000-2009). At the present, she is President of the
Inter-Cultural Health Commission of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN)
and delegate to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the United
Nations. * *
